Let’s face it. A chiseled jawline is attractive.  We’ve always loved the strong jawline of men and now jawlines are very much in fashion for women too.

A structured jawline functions as an important frame for the face and can dramatically improve the way you look. It gives the face symmetry and is a sign of maturity, strength and health. It also looks great in photos. Often what’s hiding your natural structure is a double chin or fullness under the chin. This may be a result of weight gain or it could be due to hereditary factors and aging which still gives you the appearance of being older or overweight even when you are not.

Until recently the only option to remove submental fullness was liposuction or surgery. But now we are fortunate enough to have Kybella®, an FDA approved, prescribed injectable that can destroy fat cells permanently. Kybella is deoxycholic acid which is a substance your body makes to dissolve and absorb its own fats. Not everyone is a candidate for Kybella and you will need a consultation prior to treatment. At that time your practitioner will let you know if you are a good candidate and how many sessions you will need. You will also learn more about the benefits and risks of Kybella. Depending on the amount of fullness,  you may need multiple vials over several sessions.

The procedure is done by marking a grid in the area under the chin with evenly spaced injection points, your practitioner will then inject a small amount of Kybella into each point to create an even distribution of product. There is minor discomfort during the injections that resolves within 10 min. The procedure can be performed in half an hour. Patients may experience some bruising, redness and swelling around the injection sites for up to a week after the procedure. Plan some down time just in case.

Once you have been injected and the fat cells are destroyed the body’s natural healing process with remove them. Over time, Kybella improves the overall contour of the neck and jawline- forever.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Kybella

What criteria makes a good candidate for Kybella?

  • Fat under chin (submental area)
  • You don’t want surgery
  • Submental fullness that doesn’t go away regardless of a healthy diet and exercise.
  • You have no contraindications to treatment

What are the contraindications to Kybella?

  • Pregnancy or breast feeding
  • Bleeding disorders or anti-coagulant therapy
  • Active infection in treatment area
  • Allergy to any of the ingredients in Kybella
  • Difficulty swallowing

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions vary for each individual case, and no more than 6 sessions (sessions are 1 month apart).  A limit of six such treatments, no less than one month apart, is permissible. The treatment plan is tailored to the desired outcome by the provider, and it varies depending on each patient’s situation.

Is this treatment painful?

Most clients report a minimal level of discomfort during the procedure.  Some people feel a mild dull achy-burning sensation during the injection after which they begin to have a numb sensation. Generally, ice is all that is needed for comfort.

What can I expect post-treatment?

Swelling, bruising, numbness, and hardening in the area treated are to be expected. You may have what we call a “bullfrog” appearance for several days due to swelling. The numb sensation could last several weeks. Each treatment session gets a little better. Once those fat cells are destroyed, those cells cannot accumulate fat. You should not need a further treatment once the full course is complete and you have achieved your desired outcome.

How much does Kybella cost?

The cost of Kybella depends on the number of vials and sessions you need to achieve your desired result. On average most people need 2-3 vials per session for 2-4 sessions although some may require more and some less. Average price per vial is around $600.
